Camels are the most recent addition to the farm!   They are Dromedary camels which are identified by having one hump.  Mystery surrounds what is in a Camel’s hump, and it’s not water!  The hump is used to store fat that is used like food storage!  Camels can go long periods of time without food or water and use the fat stores to nourish them.  Our Camels are consistently fed food and water and will never have to depend on their fat stores in their hump.  If a Camel gets especially thirsty, it can drink up to 40 gallons of water at one time. They are herbivores and eat desert foliage and vegetation.  Camels are very strong and can carry up to 900 pounds on their backs for up to 25 miles.  Male Camels grow to about 1,000 pounds and females grow to about 800 pounds and have a long lifespan of 40 years.  Dromedary Camels are the tallest of the camel breeds, standing at about 6 feet tall.  Camels have 3 sets of eyelids and 2 rows of eyelashes to keep the sand out of their eyes and they can completely shut their nostrils during sandstorms!  Camels are speedy!  They can run 40 miles per hour!  In order to be comfortable in the hot sand, they have thick pads of skin on their chest and knees to protect them when they sit.
