Porcupine at Andelin Family Farm

About our porcupine

Our porcupines, Elvis and Priscilla, are a newer addition to the farm! They love vegetables and are very friendly with our staff.

Fun facts about porcupines

30,000 quills

An adult porcupine has about 30,000 quills covering its body. Quills are actually modified hairs with sharp tips and barbed ends that make them difficult to remove.

Myth busting

Contrary to popular belief, porcupines cannot "shoot" their quills. The quills are only released when something comes into direct contact with them.

Excellent climbers

Porcupines are skilled climbers with strong claws and flexible feet. They spend much of their time in trees, where they're safe from most ground predators.

Herbivorous diet

Porcupines are herbivores that eat bark, leaves, twigs, and roots. They have strong teeth that never stop growing, perfect for gnawing on wood and tough plant material.
